Getting There
A small island located off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight is a great spot to escape to in UK summertime for a weekend. There are a few different options when it comes to reaching the Isle of Wight, as there are a few different ports operating ferries to and from the Isle of Wight.
Routes to ferry ports:
- London Victoria to Portsmouth (2 hours)
- London Waterloo to Southhampton (75 mins)
- Londong waterloo to Portsmouth & Southsea (1.5 – 2 hours)
The Island is served by three independent ferry operators.
- Wightlink – car ferry and passenger routes from Portsmouth and Lymington
- Red Funnel – car ferry and passenger routes from Southampton
- Hovertravel who run a passenger service from Southsea
Journey times by ferry are approximately an hour, but important to look up departure times before traveling to time your travel as required.
Getting Around
The Isle of Wight is best visited with a car or on a bike. For keen cyclists, the loop around the island is an excellent way to visit at about a total distance of 110km. There’s also plenty of shorter cycle options if not eager to spend the whole day on the bike.
For non-cyclists, it’s helpful to have a car to get around and see the island.

Cycle the Isle of Wight
This beautiful island is full of nice roads. As the loop around the island is 110km, it’s a great single day bike ride for those who enjoy being out on the bike. It can be quite windy out here, so be sure to check the wind direction before setting off. You’ll want to have the wind at your back on the military road.
The Needles
A famous and gorgeous viewpoint of large rocks off the coast of the island.

Duration
The Isle of Wight is great for a short weekend trip from London. If looking for a longer weekend getaway, it is definitely a place where you can relax and take it easy, especially if at a nice hotel or a cozy rental to make yourself at home.
Time of Year
Plan to venture to Isle of Wight when the weather is nice. As it is an island, it’s a spot you’d want to enjoy on a sunny or at least warm day!
