Lisbon is the main airport used when traveling into Portugal with direct flights from many places in Europe, and even ones from the US as well. Ericeira is just 40 minutes from Lisbon airport, making it quite easy to visit. Fly into Lisbon and then either rent a car or use a ride sharing service to travel to Ericeira. If traveling from within Portugal or Spain, the city can be access by train or car as well.

Getting Around

The town center is small and very walkable. If hoping to visit other areas around Ericeira, it’s helpful to have a car so definitely worth renting a car if you’ll be leaving the town. Ride sharing services are easy and cheap within the town and general area.

Accommodations

Ericeira is a known surfing destination and great place to base yourself if planning to spend a lot of time surfing. As it’s right on the coast, there’s a variety of different beaches for surfing, options for all levels. Consider staying in the town center for easy access to cafes, bars and restaurants on your visit. For those visiting Lisbon, it is an easy day-trip.

Things to do and see

Surfing

This beach town is known for it’s surfing spots. Year round there’s largely consistent conditions, making it possible to surf most days of the year. There’s a few different beaches, and the one you visit will depend on your skills and the weather.

Cape Roca and Ursa Beach

Located about 45 minutes from Ericeira, this is a stunning spot on the coast. As you’re high up on the cliffs here, the views out over the ocean are gorgeous. Plan to walk around the trails down to Ursa Beach which is a nice cove beach. It does require good shoes to get down to the beach so definitely do this in at least gym shoes rather than flip flops. Enjoy some time at the beach and then hike back up.

Other Notes

Duration

For surf lovers, it’s a great place to spend a few days and take lessons or get out on the water daily. If just visiting, one can spend a day here visiting the town, hitting the beach, and enjoying a meal in town.

Time of year

The summer is always a good time to visit Portugal, but also means it will be more crowded. The shoulder months of May and September often bring really nice weather with less people so a bit more ideal time to visit.

Weather

Portugal weather will be nice from about April/May until September/October. Of course it will be cooler on the shoulder months, and often windier and foggier as the winter months approach.
