Europe is one of those places where choosing a favorite destination feels nearly impossible. Within a few hours, you can go from wandering the streets of a major city to hiking in the Alps, drinking wine in the countryside, or swimming off the coast of a tiny Mediterranean island.
So rather than attempting to rank my favorite places in Europe overall, I’ve broken them down by type of trip. Whether you’re keen for a city break, an island escape, a countryside getaway, a mountain adventure, or a few days along the coast, these are my top 10 European destinations in each category.
And, of course, there are still plenty on my list to explore! The bucket list is much longer so I’ve called out “Next up” as places I’ve not been, but would like to travel to in each bucket soon.

🌆 City Escapes
The big ones. Loud, crowded, endlessly worth it

- Paris — wine bars, bakeries, and terraces, what else do you need?
- Munich — beer halls, Bavarian order, and the Alps an hour down the track.
- Barcelona — Gaudí, the beach, and tapas
- Budapest — thermal baths, ruin bars, and the Danube splitting the city in two.
